The hair that
grows on the chin and cheeks of men at puberty is called a beard and is often
referred to as a sign of puberty. In ancient times, it was considered sacred in
Europe and Asia. The beard is part of the religious symbol of Muslims and is
also considered a sign of honor among Jews and Roman Catholic Christians. The
Israelites were not allowed to shave their beards during their slavery in
Egypt.
Therefore, they
used to leave their beards long and with this sign they were distinguished from
the Egyptians because the Egyptians used to shave their beards. Due to this
centuries-old custom, the beard became a sign of respect.
Alexander the
Great banned beards in his army. Even in Islam, where on the one hand beard is
considered a religious symbol, it is considered permissible to shave it in
times of war. In the Muslim world, only the Taliban regime passed that made it
a crime to shave a beard in Afghanistan, and those without a beard were
regularly punished.
In Russia at the
time of Peter the Great, and a little earlier in England, a tax was imposed on
bearded men, and beards were considered only a royal honor. So all the kings of
England had beards. Edward VIII abolished this custom and his successor brother
followed suit.
