Mahmood Hasan Deobandi (known as Sheikh Ul Hind; 1851–1920) was an Indian religious scholar and freedom fighter, who co-founded the Jamia Millia Islamia and started the Silk Handkerchief Movement for Indian independence. He was the first student to study at Darul Uloom Deoband. His teachers included Muhammad Qasim Nanotwi and Mahmood Deobandi, and he was authorized in Sufism by Imdadullah Mahajir Makki and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi.

 

Mahmud Hasan was a strong opponent of the British rule. He started movements to overthrow the British rule in India. But in 1916 he was arrested and imprisoned in Malta. He was released in 1920, and was awarded the title of "Sheikh-ul-Hind" (Leader of India) by the Khilafat Committee. He wrote fatwas in support of the non-cooperation movement and traveled to different parts of India to involve Muslims in the freedom movement.

 

In November 1920, he presided over the second general meeting of the Jamiat Ulema of India and was appointed as the president of the Jamiat Ulema of India. Sheikh Ul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan Medical College is named in his memory. In 2013, the Government of India issued a commemorative stamp on her silk handkerchief movement.

 

Mahmood Hasan was released in May 1920, and by 8 June 1920 he had reached Bombay. He was welcomed by prominent scholars and politicians including Abdul Bari Farangi Mahali, Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad, Kifayatullah Dehlvi. , Shaukat Ali and Mahatma Gandhi. His release was seen as a great aid to the Khilafat movement and he was awarded the title of "Sheikh-ul-Hind" (Leader of India) by the Khilafat Committee. .
