Muhammad Attaullah Siddiqui writes:

There is no authentic reference about it, but there is an unauthentic fictional story that in the third century AD, there was a priest named Valentine who was captured by a nun.

Since marriage was forbidden for monks and nuns in Christianity. Therefore, one day Valentine told his lover that he had been told in a dream that February 14th is such a day that if a monk or nun has intercourse on that day, it will not be considered a sin. The nun believed him and both of them went through everything in the passion of love. For flouting the traditions of the church in this way, their fate was what usually happens, i.e. they were killed. Later, some organizations started celebrating Valentine’s Day in his memory, holding him to the status of 'martyr of love'.

This incident took place on February 14, 279 AD, and this day is celebrated in its memory. It is celebrated as Lover's Festival. Why is it celebrated as the festival of lovers? And regarding his relation to St. Valentine, the above passage from the Book of Knowledge is worthy of attention:

Valentine's Day is believed to have originated as a Roman festival called Luper Calia. Ancient Roman men wore the names of their girlfriends on their sleeves during this festival. Sometimes the couple would also exchange gifts. Later, when this festival was celebrated as Cosint 'Valentine', some of its traditions were retained. It came to be considered as an important day for anyone who was looking for a life partner.

A seventeenth-century hopeful maiden is said to have sewn five leaves to her pillow before going to bed on Valentine's Day, believing that by doing so she would be able to dream of her future husband. Later, people started sending Valentine cards instead of gifts.
