A few days from now, March 21 will be celebrated as International Poetry Day across the world and it is a matter of pride for us that our national language Urdu has given birth to such distinguished poets as Mir Taqi Mir, Ghalib, Iqbal, Dagh, Faiz, Faraz and June. Created by whose thoughts the whole world is affected.

 

Urdu poetry is not only written down on paper but it is widely read, sung, heard and recited and mushairas are organized for it in which people participate with great interest. Mushairas have played a great role in the development of Urdu poetry and Ghazal in particular. Qawwali is listened to with great interest in the Indo-Pak sub-continent, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has presented the standard Urdu ghazal very elegantly in his Qawwali. Also, Bollywood has also played an important role in popularizing Urdu poetry among the people.

 

After partition in 1947, eminent poets and researchers of Urdu poetry were divided between the border lines. However, Urdu poetry flourished in both India and Pakistan and Muslims and Hindus continued this tradition in both countries.
