Henry Rider Haggard wrote over fifty books spanning 40 years. Most of these were about Africa. His first, and most famous, was King Solomon's Mines in which he created his enduring character, Allan Quartermain. Rider Haggard was close friends with Frederick Burnham and was familiar with F.C. Selous, both very adventurous African characters, and it is thought that he based Quartermain on these two. He often used the "lost civilization" story line and many of his works are in this genre. Most of his books have a heavy dose of mysticism and magic. At the time he wrote little was known about some parts Africa so it was a mysterious place.

 

His second most famous work is SHE. This is the first book of the She quadrogy of which Ayesha, She and Allan, and Wisdom's Daughter are the others. Wisdom's Daughter relates the beginning of Ayesha's curse.
