The most beautiful and the most difficult letter of the world of calligraphy Nastaliq was invented by Khwaja Mir Ali Tabrizi (790 Hijri / 1388 AD - 850 Hijri / 1446 AD). According to a tradition, Khawaja Mir Ali Tabrizi used to pray to Allah Almighty to invent a letter that is unique. This prayer was accepted and one night Hazrat Ali (RA) told him in a dream to think about the organs of a duck and a chicken and invent a new letter. So Khawaja Mir Ali Tabrizi invented the Nastaliq script which made its existence in the world of Islam.

 

According to another tradition, he stayed in a cave for eleven years and practiced calligraphy in search of this script. In other forms of Arabic calligraphy, the words are quite large in the form of Salat, Naqsh, Mohaqaq and Rehan, etc. Words can be connected with each other and the text becomes stable even if the calligrapher is not skilled in these calligraphy conventions. But this is not the case in Nastaliq.In Nastaliq, the words are small and very difficult and full of sharp edges and tight circles in terms of texture, and then the words and letters cannot join each other in the text.Contrast is negligible and words and letters are visible separately. So this letter requires perfect skill. A normal level scribe would be unable to render this letter as such.

 

The birth of Nastaliq surprised the entire art world and if evaluated impartially, the Nastaliq calligraphy is currently the most beautiful calligraphy in the Islamic world.
